Marionnet is a "virtual network laboratory" allowing users to use a single host computer to simulate a complete network including virtual hubs, switches, routers, cables and computers. Virtual computers can run unmodified GNU/Linux software including graphical applications, and even connect to the host network.

Each component of the virtual network can be independently started, paused, resumed or shut down; it’s also possible to simulate defective devices such as cables losing packets or flipping bits with a user-specified probability.

Our software is actively used for teaching networks at several universities in France, and can be employed to test and develop distributed applications. Marionnet is free software, released under the GNU GPL.
