Most people and companies think they can rebuild system by backing up critical data. However, when catastrophe failure occurs, they lose all, including entire operating system, data, setting and applications.
Therefore disaster recovery is always an issue not only for enterprise but also for a person. Clonezilla is a partition or disk cloning tool similar to Symantec Ghost. It saves and restores only blocks in use on the hard drive if the file system is supported. For unsupported file systems, dd is used instead. In early 2008 a new program, Partclone , was added to Clonezilla that actually allows you to save and restore more types of OSs, e.g. GNU/Linux, MS Windows and Intel-based Mac OS ! Partclone, which supports file systems like FAT, ext2, ext3, reiserfs, reiser4, xfs, and hfs+ saves or restores only the used blocks in a file system. There are 2 types of Clonezilla : Clonezilla live and Clonezilla server edition. In this talk we will focus on how to use Clonezilla live to do bare metal backup and recovery. You will know how to use a CD or USB flash drive to do a whole system backup and recovery.
